INSCRIPTION.

1 Come, and where these runnels fall,
2 Listen to my madrigal!
3 Far from all sounds of all the strife,
4 That murmur through the walks of life;[Page 156]
5 From grief, inquietude, and fears,
6 From scenes of riot, or of tears;
7 From passions, cankering day by day,
8 That wear the inmost heart away;
9 From pale Detraction's envious spite,
10 That worries where it fears to bite;
11 From mad Ambition's worldly chase,
12 Come, and in this shady place,
13 Be thine Contentment's humble joys,
14 And a life that makes no noise,
15 Save when fancy, musing long,
16 Turns to desultory song;
92 "And Fancy, void of sorrow, turns to song. " Parnell.
17 And wakes some lonely melody,
18 Like the water dripping by.
19 Come, and where these runnels fall,
20 Listen to my madrigal!
