ON LEAVING A VILLAGE IN SCOTLAND.

1 Clysdale! as thy romantic vales I leave,
2 And bid farewell to each retiring hill,
3 Where musing memory seems to linger still,
4 Tracing the broad bright landscape; much I grieve[Page 10]
5 That, mingled with the toiling crowd, no more
6 I may return your varied views to mark,
7 Of rocks amid the sunshine towering dark,
8 Of rivers winding wild,
10 There is a wildness almost fantastic in the view of the river from Stirling Castle, the course of which is seen for many miles, making a thousand turnings.
or mountains hoar,
9 Or castle gleaming on the distant steep!
10 Yet many a look back on thy hills I cast,
11 And many a softened image of the past
12 Sadly combine, and bid remembrance keep,
13 To soothe me with fair scenes, and fancies rude,
14 When I pursue my path in solitude.
