SONG VIII.

Praise to GOD for learning to Read.

I.
1 THE Praises of my Tongue
2 I offer to the LORD,
3 That I was taught, and learnt so young
4 To read his holy Word.
[Page 12]
II.
5 That I am brought to know
6 The Danger I was in,
7 By Nature and by Practice too,
8 A wretched Slave to Sin.
III.
9 That I am lead to see
10 I can do nothing well;
11 And whither shall a Sinner flee
12 To save himself from Hell?
IV.
13 Dear LORD. this Book of thine
14 Informs me where to go,
15 For Grace to pardon all my Sin,
16 And make me holy too.
V.
17 Here I can read, and learn
18 How CHRIST, the Son of GOD,
19 Has undertook our great Concern;
20 Our Ransom cost his Blood.
VI.
21 And now he reigns above,
22 He sends his Spirit down
23 To shew the Wonders of his Love,
24 And make his Gospel known.
[Page 13]
VII.
25 O may that Spirit teach,
26 And make my Heart receive
27 Those Truths which all thy Servants preach
28 And all thy Saints believe.
VIII.
29 Then shall I praise the LORD
30 In a more chearful Strain,
31 That I was taught to read his Word,
32 And have not learnt in vain.
