An ODE.

To my much honored Friend Sir THOMAS GARRARD, Baronet, upon his Climacterical YEAR.

I.
1 THE famous old Prophet that twenty years toil'd,
2 To write us the Psalms that dunce Hopkins has spoil'd,
3 In giving account of the Ages of Men;
4 Has strangely confin'd us to Threescore and Ten.
5 He tells us, to scare us, his last hour is near,
6 That enters the sad Climacterical Year.
II.
7 Then welfare the Man that inspir'd by good Wine,
8 Cares neither for Seventy nor seven times Nine;
9 Whose jolly brisk Humor adds sands to his Glass,
10 And standing upright can look Fate in the face;
11 That makes much of Life, but when Nature is due
12 Declines like a Flower, as sweet as he grew.
[Page 98]
13 To his fair Example and Grandeur of Soul,
14 Let each in his order Carouse a full Bowl;
15 Whatever dull Gown men or Sages may think,
16 There's no Man grows old till he ceases to drink;
17 Then Health to Sir Thomas, and that he may be,
18 As well as sixscore as at sixty and three.
