1 SOLITUDE! where shall I find
2 Thee, pleasing to the thoughtful Mind!
3 Sweet Delights to Thee belong,
4 Untasted by the vulgar Throng.
5 Weary of Vice and Noise I flee,
6 Sweetest Comforter, to Thee.
7 Here the Mild and Holy Dove
8 Peace inspires and Joy and Love.
9 Thy unmolested, silent Shade
10 No tumultuous Sounds invade:
11 No Stain of Guilt is seen in Thee,
12 To soil thy spotless Purity.
13 Here the smiling Fields around
14 Softest Harmony resound.
15 Here with Angel Quires combin'd,
16 The Lord of his own peaceful Mind
17 Glides thro' Life, from Business far,
18 And noisy Strife, and eating Care.
19 Here retir'd from Pomp and State
20 (The envy'd Torment of the Great)
21 Innocent he leads his Days,
22 Far from giddy Thirst of Praise.
23 Here his Accounts with studious Care
24 Preparing for the last great Bar,
25 He weeps the Stains of Guilt away,
26 And ripens for Eternal Day.
27 Hoarded Wealth desire who please,
28 Tow'rs and gilded Palaces.
29 Fraudless Silence may I find,
30 Solitude and Peace of Mind;

33 Ye Rich, ye Learn'd, ye Great, confess
34 This in Life is Happiness,
