10 If Harding was girlish and cold,
11 If never an ogle was met from Miss Grimes,
12 If Flavia was blasted and old;

13 I chose without liking, and left without pain,
14 Nor welcom'd the frown with a sigh;
15 I scorn'd, like a monkey, to dangle my chain,
16 And paint them new charms with a lie.

17 Once Cotton was handsome; I flam'd, and I burn'd,
18 I died to obtain the bright Queen;
19 But when I beheld my Epistle return'd,
20 By Jesu it alter'd the scene.
