1 WHILST, sacred now to secret woe,
2 Thy frequent tears, Miranda, flow,
3 The pensive Muse resumes the strain,
4 And fondly tries to soothe thy pain.
5 Where'er our wand'ring footsteps stray,
6 If Fate, or Chance, direct the way;
7 If Hope dilate the heart of youth,
8 Or Age pursue the hermit Truth;
9 Each passing hour this moral shews,
10 Who prays for Life, but covets woes;
11 Yet still from Death we froward turn,
12 And, frighted, view the peaceful Urn;

13 O'er Friendship's grave desponding weep,
14 And mourn for those who only sleep;
15 Whilst, brib'd alone by grief and pain,
16 To this vile spot that Hope we chain;
17 Which Heav'n ordain'd on cherub wing to soar:
18 A pledge of joy when Time shall be no more.
