The Elevation.

1.
1 O how ambitious is my Soul,
2 How high she now aspires!
3 There's nothing can on Earth controul,
4 Or limit her Desires.
[Page 34]
2.
5 Upon the Wings of Thought she flies
6 Above the reach of Sight,
7 And finds a way thro' pathless Skies
8 To everlasting Light:
3.
9 From whence with blameless Scorn she views
10 The Follies of Mankind;
11 And smiles to see how each pursues
12 Joys fleeting as the Wind.
4.
13 Yonder's the little Ball of Earth,
14 It lessens as I rise;
15 That Stage of transitory Mirth,
16 Of lasting Miseries:
5.
17 My Scorn does into Pity turn,
18 And I lament the Fate
19 Of Souls, that still in Bodies mourn,
20 For Faults which they create:
6.
21 Souls without Spot, till Flesh they wear,
22 Which their pure Substance stains:
23 While they th' uneasie Burthen bear,
24 They're never free from Pains.
